National Times Bureau :- Punjab continues to reel under the threat of floods as an Orange Alert has been issued for Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, and Rupnagar, warning of heavy rainfall over the next three days. According to the Meteorological Department, the persistent downpour could worsen the situation in several regions already struggling with rising water levels.
A Yellow Alert has also been declared for Gurdaspur, Nawanshahr, Fatehgarh Sahib, and Patiala, effective until September 1. Officials have warned of moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds (30–40 kmph) in Amritsar, Gurdaspur, and Pathankot, urging residents to remain on high alert for the next 48 hours.
Heavy rain is predicted on August 31 and September 1 across Mohali, Patiala, Fatehgarh Sahib, and other adjoining districts. For September 2, no heavy rainfall alert has been issued so far.
Continuous rainfall in neighboring Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir could impact dam water levels, which may in turn affect Punjab’s rivers and canals.
In recent days, heavy rains have already battered several districts, bringing down the state’s temperature by 2.1 degrees Celsius. Floodwaters have begun affecting parts of Patiala, where the overflowing Ghaggar River has submerged farmland. Water released from Chandigarh’s Sukhna Lake has also reached border villages between Punjab and Haryana, adding to the ongoing crisis.
