Kullu, March 1, 2025: Flash floods triggered by relentless torrential rain have caused chaos in the lower areas of Kullu district, Himachal Pradesh. Several vehicles were either washed away or trapped in thick sludge, while landslides disrupted multiple locations across the region.
Severe Weather and Road Closures
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has attributed the extreme weather to a Western Disturbance, predicting light snowfall in isolated areas of Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, and the higher reaches of Kullu district. The situation has led to the closure of 583 roads, including five National Highways, according to the Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (HPSDMA).
The ongoing downpour has also affected essential services, with 2,263 distribution transformers (DTRs) failing, leaving several areas without electricity. Additionally, 279 water supply schemes have been disrupted, impacting thousands of residents.
Chief Minister Urges Caution
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has urged people to stay away from rivers and streams as heavy rain and snowfall continue. He reassured that authorities are actively monitoring the situation and advised citizens to strictly follow administrative guidelines.
“I have been taking stock of the situation since morning. I request everyone to be cautious and adhere to official advisories,” Sukhu said.
Due to the rising water levels in Kullu Valley, authorities have ordered the opening of power project dam gates to manage the situation and prevent further flooding.
Heavy Snowfall and Infrastructure Damage
The upper Himalayan regions, including Lahaul and Spiti, have experienced intense snowfall. The Meteorological Centre in Shimla has issued an alert for heavy rain and snowfall across Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, and Mandi districts.
Kullu Deputy Commissioner Torul S Ravish has urged people to stay indoors until water levels recede. “Many roads, including the main road on the left bank, are blocked due to 15-16 hours of continuous rain. Water levels in rivers and streams are rising, and sudden landslides can worsen the situation,” he warned.
Manali has reported one foot of snow, leading to the closure of all educational institutions in the district. The main national highway from Jalori Pass remains blocked.
Authorities are working round the clock to restore power and clear roadways, but adverse weather conditions continue to pose challenges.
