Five Dead, One Injured as SUV Rams Divider on Delhi-Gurugram Expressway

Gurugram (Balwinder Singh): A horrific accident on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway claimed the lives of five individuals, including three women, in the early hours of Saturday. The crash occurred near Exit 9, when a Mahindra Thar lost control and crashed into a central divider.

The SUV was carrying six passengers, all of whom had reportedly travelled from Uttar Pradesh to Gurugram. The accident took place around 4 AM, and according to preliminary police reports, the vehicle was being driven at high speed when the driver failed to negotiate a turn near the exit, resulting in a violent collision.

Five of the occupants — three women and two men — succumbed to their injuries at the scene. The sole survivor, a male passenger, was rushed to a private hospital where he is currently in critical condition.

Emergency Services Respond Swiftly

A team from Sector 40 Police Station arrived at the scene shortly after receiving a distress call. The badly damaged Thar was found crashed against the median, with wreckage scattered across multiple lanes of the highway.

“At this stage, the identities of the victims have not been confirmed. The SUV had a Uttar Pradesh registration, and all individuals appear to have been travelling together,” said Inspector Lalit Kumar, Station House Officer, Sector 40.

High-Speed Driving Suspected

While investigations are still ongoing, early findings suggest that the driver may have been speeding and possibly lost control of the vehicle while attempting to switch lanes near the exit. There is no confirmation yet on whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol or any other substances, though toxicology reports have been requested.

Authorities are also examining CCTV footage from traffic surveillance systems in the area to reconstruct the events leading up to the crash. A forensic team has been assigned to inspect the vehicle for mechanical issues or possible brake failure.

Accident Spot Known for Risk

The area near Exit 9 has been flagged in the past for multiple road mishaps, largely attributed to speeding vehicles and sudden exits. Despite warning signs and speed restrictions, many drivers tend to ignore traffic norms on this stretch, raising safety concerns.

Local residents and commuters have often demanded enhanced safety measures, including speed cameras, rumble strips, and better lighting to prevent such incidents.
