CALGARY ( Rajeev Sharma): Five vehicles belonging to a courier company were extensively damaged by fire in northeast Calgary early Friday morning, prompting an investigation by the Calgary Police Service (CPS) arson unit.
Police responded to the 0–100 block of Cityline Common N.E. at approximately 2 a.m. on August 28 after receiving reports of multiple vehicles on fire. Five courier vehicles were found extensively damaged in the incident.
According to reports, the vehicles belonged to a courier company that had recently relocated from Regina to Calgary, reportedly about two weeks before the incident. The company’s owner described the loss as devastating, saying the damaged vehicles represented a significant portion of the company’s fleet.
Local residents were also shocked by the incident. Lak Sidhu said he and his girlfriend heard a loud bang before seeing several vehicles engulfed in flames. Another resident, Emrinder Singh, said one of the vehicles exploded only metres from the front door of his new home.
The circumstances surrounding the fire remain under investigation. While the incident has led to speculation about possible commercial rivalry or a courier-related dispute, police have not confirmed any connection to Amazon, another delivery company, or any specific motive. Investigators will determine whether the fires were deliberately set and what may have led to the incident.
CPS is asking anyone who witnessed suspicious activity or has security-camera or dashcam footage from the area between approximately 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. to come forward. No arrests or charges have been announced so far.
