Chandigarh (Balwinder Singh): Dr. Lalit Jain, Director of the Census Directorate Haryana under the Ministry of Home Affairs, issued a final appeal to residents on Wednesday, marking the last day for the self-enumeration phase. Citizens are encouraged to complete their details via the official portal, se.census.gov.in, a process that takes approximately five to seven minutes. According to official data, a record-breaking 2.45 lakh families in Haryana have already completed their self-enumeration, showcasing high levels of public awareness and particularly strong participation from the youth.
Following the conclusion of the self-enumeration window, the actual house-listing and door-to-door census operations are scheduled to commence across the state on May 1. Dr. Jain urged the public to extend full cooperation to the designated enumerators and supervisors visiting their localities. Residents who have already self-enumerated simply need to share their generated ID number with the visiting official to complete the process, ensuring their data is accurately captured for national records.
The Directorate emphasized the legal and civic importance of the exercise, noting that the census is a vital national responsibility that informs policy-making and the equitable distribution of resources. Under the Census Act, providing accurate information is mandatory, and non-cooperation or refusal to provide details to authorized officials constitutes a punishable offence. However, Dr. Jain reassured the public that all individual data collected will be kept strictly confidential and will not be shared with any third-party entities or institutions.
To facilitate a smooth transition to the field-work phase, the department has established a dedicated helpline at 1855 for citizens and census staff to report difficulties. District administrations have completed comprehensive preparations, ensuring that enumerators are well-equipped to handle the logistics of the state-wide rollout. The Director expressed gratitude to local authorities for their meticulous planning and reiterated that the department stands ready to resolve any grievances to ensure a successful and inclusive 2026 census operation.
