Calgary (Rajeev Sharma) — In response to reported bomb threats aboard three flights arriving in Calgary from Germany, fighter jets were scrambled today early morning, prompting a comprehensive security response at Calgary International Airport.
NORAD confirmed that Canadian CF-18s and U.S. F-15s escorted the aircraft “out of an abundance of caution.” All three planes landed safely, and the threats were later deemed not credible.
Defence Minister David McGuinty commended the swift response, noting that the joint Canadian–U.S. air defence system functioned precisely as intended. “Our personnel executed their training flawlessly, and public safety was never compromised,” he stated.
The RCMP has assumed control of the investigation and is working to determine the origin of the threats.
YYC International Airport reported minimal disruption to regular operations but acknowledged heightened security checks, including sweeps by bomb-sniffing dogs. Airport officials expressed gratitude to law enforcement and staff for their prompt action.
Although the incident concluded without harm, it raised fresh concerns regarding aviation security and the growing challenges of managing threats in the airline industry.
