Family of IPS Officer Y Puran Kumar Consents to Post-Mortem After Days of Reluctance; Cremation Likely Today

Chandigarh (Balwinder Singh): In a significant development, the family of senior IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, who was found dead at his home four days ago, has agreed to allow a post-mortem examination. The decision may pave the way for his cremation, which is expected to take place later today.

Kumar, a 2001-batch officer, was discovered deceased in his Sector 11 residence in what authorities believe was a case of suicide. Since his death, the family had been hesitant to proceed with the post-mortem, delaying both the autopsy and final rites.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the family’s consent came following sustained outreach by senior Haryana officials. Over the past two days, Chief Secretary Anurag Rastogi and Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Sumita Mishra personally visited the grieving family to offer support and encourage them to permit the medical process. State Minister Krishan Lal Panwar had also met with the family earlier in the week.

While the hospital has now received a formal request to carry out the post-mortem, preparations are underway to form a medical board for the procedure, which is anticipated to take approximately an hour once it begins.

Speaking to reporters, the late officer’s brother, Vikram Kumar, acknowledged that the family had been in deep discussion about the matter. “We’ve been deliberating as a family and will be sharing our final decision soon,” he said Thursday evening, shortly before the agreement was made.

Although the exact time of the cremation has not been officially confirmed, it is expected to be held today, sources close to the family indicated.

The late officer’s death has sent shockwaves through the police and administrative community. As formalities begin to move forward, many await further details from the post-mortem to shed light on the events leading to the tragedy.
