Extortion Network Targeting Indian Community Busted: Rana Cheema Arrested After Violent Campaign in Calgary

Calgary (Rajeev Sharma): The Calgary Police Service has arrested 45-year-old Rana Cheema in what officials are calling a significant breakthrough in a months-long investigation into a wave of extortion attempts that have rattled Calgary, particularly within the Indian community. Police allege that Cheema was behind a series of coordinated incidents between March 4 and March 22, involving shootings, property damage, and suspicious activity near daycare centres on the outskirts of the city, all tied to efforts to intimidate and extract money from targeted individuals and businesses.

Investigators say the accused was attempting to gain control over substantial financial assets and business operations through threats and violence. While several incidents occurred near daycare facilities, police clarified that children were not believed to be in direct danger, though the nature of the threats elevated the seriousness of the case. Authorities stressed that targeting locations associated with children was a deliberate tactic to amplify fear and pressure victims into compliance.

The arrest comes amid a broader surge in extortion-related crimes across Calgary. Since January 2025, police have recorded 41 such attempts, with 18 involving shootings directed at homes, vehicles, and commercial properties. Officials describe the pattern as organized and escalating, indicating a calculated campaign of intimidation. Cheema’s arrest is the first in connection with these incidents, and investigators have not ruled out the involvement of additional suspects or networks.

Regarding Rana Cheema’s past, police have not publicly disclosed any detailed prior criminal history linked to this case at this stage of the investigation. Authorities typically release such information only when it is directly relevant to ongoing proceedings or proven in court. As a result, any claims about previous involvement in similar activities remain unconfirmed in official records available so far. Cheema is scheduled to appear in court on April 22, as the investigation by the Calgary Police Service continues to unfold.
