New Delhi, February 22, 2025 – Former RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das has been appointed as the second Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His tenure will be co-terminus with the Prime Minister’s term, as per the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.
Das, who stepped down as RBI Governor in December 2024, will now serve alongside PK Mishra, the current Principal Secretary to the PM.
Das’ Legacy in Governance and Finance
A 1980-batch IAS officer, Das has had an extensive career in governance, especially in finance, taxation, industries, and infrastructure. He played a key role in implementing GST in 2017 and was involved in drafting eight Union Budgets.
During his tenure as RBI Governor (2018-2024), he focused on economic stability, inflation control, and pandemic recovery. His leadership during Covid-19 earned him praise for RBI’s financial interventions.
Das also held significant global roles, representing India at the IMF, G20, BRICS, and SAARC. He served as India’s Alternate Governor at institutions like the World Bank, ADB, NDB, and AIIB.
A postgraduate from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University, Das previously served as India’s G20 Sherpa and a member of the 15th Finance Commission before taking over as RBI Governor.
