Ex-IPS Officer Amar Singh Chahal Attempts Suicide, Alleges ₹8.1 Crore Cyber Fraud in 12-Page Note

Chandigarh/Patiala, December 22, 2025: Former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Amar Singh Chahal allegedly attempted suicide on Monday and is currently battling for life at a private hospital in Patiala, police officials said.
Patiala Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Varun Sharma confirmed that Chahal was found in a critical condition and was immediately shifted to hospital for emergency treatment. His condition continues to remain serious.
According to officials, a 12-page suicide note purportedly written by Chahal has been recovered. The note is addressed to Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav. In the letter, the former officer alleged that he was cheated of around ₹8.1 crore by cyber fraudsters posing as wealth management and investment advisors.
Chahal claimed that the fraudsters operated through WhatsApp and Telegram groups and projected themselves as representatives or associates of reputed banks and financial institutions. He alleged that the scammers lured him by promising exceptionally high returns through stock trading, IPO investments, over-the-counter trades and so-called “quantitative funds.”
The note further alleges that fake digital dashboards were created to show inflated profits, giving the illusion of successful investments. Chahal described the fraud as highly organised and urged law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the racket.
In the purported note, Chahal stated that no individual other than the alleged cyber fraudsters was responsible for his decision to take the extreme step, officials said.
Police have launched an investigation into the allegations mentioned in the note, including the cyber fraud angle, and are examining electronic evidence and financial transactions linked to the case.
Notably, Amar Singh Chahal was earlier named as one of the accused in the 2015 police firing case related to anti-sacrilege protests in Faridkot district. A Punjab Police Special Investigation Team had filed a chargesheet in the case in February 2023.
Further developments are awaited as Chahal remains under medical care and the investigation progresses.
