Eight Opposition MPs Suspended from Lok Sabha for Remainder of Budget Session Amid Uproar

New Delhi, February 3, 2026: Seven Congress Members of Parliament and one MP from the CPI(M) were suspended from the Lok Sabha on Tuesday for the remainder of the ongoing Budget Session, intensifying the standoff between the government and the opposition.

The suspension, which will remain in effect until the conclusion of the Budget Session on April 2, was ordered after the Chair accused the members of unruly conduct, including tearing papers and throwing them towards the Chair during repeated disruptions in the House.

The action came on a day marked by persistent turmoil in Parliament, with opposition members protesting against Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi being denied permission to refer to an article citing excerpts from an unpublished memoir of former Army chief General M M Naravane related to the 2020 India-China border clash. The opposition has also been demanding discussions on issues such as the India-US trade deal announced by US President Donald Trump and allegations linked to a demolition drive at Manikarnika Ghat in Varanasi.

When the Lok Sabha reassembled at 3 pm following multiple adjournments, presiding officer Dilip Saikia named eight members for disorderly conduct. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju then moved a resolution seeking their suspension for the rest of the session.

Addressing the House, Rijiju said the MPs had shown complete disregard for parliamentary decorum and the authority of the Chair. He alleged that the members not only tore official documents and threw them towards the Chair but also attempted to climb onto the Secretary General’s table. The resolution was passed by a voice vote amid continuing uproar, after which the House was adjourned for the day.

The MPs suspended are Gurjeet Singh Aujla, Hibi Eden, C Kiran Kumar Reddy, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, Manickam Tagore, Prashant Padole and Dean Kuriakose from the Congress, along with S Venkatesan of the CPI(M).

Following the suspensions, Congress MPs led by Rahul Gandhi staged a protest outside the Parliament complex, calling the move undemocratic. Opposition leaders said demonstrations would continue outside the House as well.

The Lok Sabha has witnessed repeated disruptions since Monday afternoon over the refusal to allow Gandhi to make references linked to Naravane’s unpublished book, further deepening the deadlock between the ruling benches and the opposition.
