New Delhi/Chandigarh, November 7, 2025: In a significant reversal, the Ministry of Education on Friday withdrew its earlier notification to alter the constitution and composition of Panjab University’s Senate and Syndicate. The move came after strong opposition and consultations with students, faculty members, former vice-chancellors, and the current vice-chancellor.
The ministry had earlier invoked Section 72 of the Punjab Reorganisation Act, 1966, to implement recommendations made by a High-Level Committee set up by the Chancellor on March 2, 2021. The proposed changes aimed to modify the governance structure of the university. However, after widespread feedback and protests from the academic community, the ministry decided to rescind the order.
Officials said the decision was made following detailed discussions with stakeholders and multiple student organisations, who urged the ministry to maintain the university’s long-standing democratic framework.
With the rollback, the current Senate and Syndicate structure of Panjab University will remain unchanged, ensuring continuity in its existing system of governance.
