Washington, June 22, 2025 — U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has issued a stern warning to Iran against any move to close the Strait of Hormuz, calling it an act of “economic suicide” that could spark a dangerous global crisis. The remarks came amid rising geopolitical tensions following coordinated American and Israeli strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities.
Speaking to media on Sunday, Rubio emphasized the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, a key maritime route that facilitates nearly 25% of the world’s oil supply. “If Iran attempts to shut down this vital artery, they won’t just be harming the world they’ll be destroying their own economy,” he said. “The global response will be swift, and the consequences will be severe.”
Rubio also urged China, a key trading partner and energy buyer of Iran, to use its leverage to de-escalate the situation. “It’s in China’s interest to ensure the free flow of oil through the region. They must communicate clearly with Tehran,” he added.
His comments followed reports that the Iranian Parliament has voted in favor of closing the strait, although the final decision rests with the Supreme National Security Council. The vote came shortly after the U.S. launched “Operation Midnight Hammer,” targeting three of Iran’s nuclear sites in response to Iran’s continued enrichment activities.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed that no rise in off-site radiation levels has been detected following the attacks. However, Iran has condemned the U.S. strikes as a violation of international law, vowing retaliation and reaffirming its commitment to its nuclear program.
Rubio clarified that Washington is not seeking war with Iran but stressed that actions disrupting international waters or threatening global oil stability would force the United States and its allies to act decisively.
The international community now watches with deep concern as tensions in the Gulf continue to escalate, with the Strait of Hormuz becoming a flashpoint for potential broader conflict.
