New Delhi, June 8, 2025: In a major push to strengthen indigenous defence manufacturing, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has officially transferred technology for nine advanced defence systems to Indian private companies for commercial production.
The technology handovers were announced during the DRDO-Industry Meet held at the Maharashtra MSME Defence Expo in Pune. These transfers cover a wide spectrum of strategic capabilities including electronics, high-energy materials, combat vehicle systems, naval platforms, and aerospace components.
Among the critical technologies transferred are:
Carbon-Carbon brake disks for the Light Combat Aircraft (Tejas),
Infantry assault bridges and foot bridges for armoured vehicles,
High-explosive grenade variants,
Thermal imager sight systems,
Fire detection and suppression technologies.
The DRDO emphasized that this initiative is in line with the central government’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” vision, aimed at reducing import dependency and enabling India’s private sector to become a key player in the global defence supply chain.
As part of this event, DRDO also awarded SAMAR (System for Advance Manufacturing Assessment and Rating) certifications to nine partner industries that have demonstrated high-quality manufacturing capabilities. These certifications validate the readiness of private industry to deliver defence-grade technology with international standards of precision and quality.
DRDO Chairman Dr Samir V. Kamat highlighted the significance of public-private collaboration in achieving national security goals. He reiterated DRDO’s commitment to not only support technology development but also provide continued guidance and quality assurance under its Development-cum-Production Partner (DcPP) model.
Notably, since the introduction of DRDO’s updated Transfer of Technology (ToT) policy in 2019, more than 1,400 licensing agreements have been signed with private firms, enabling them to manufacture and deliver cutting-edge defence solutions both for domestic and international markets.
This transfer of nine critical defence systems is expected to bolster India’s standing in the global arms industry and enhance the operational capabilities of the Indian Armed Forces with cost-effective, locally manufactured systems.
