Washington (Rajeev Sharma): US President Donald Trump has indicated that Washington is close to finalising a major understanding with Iran, suggesting that months of tense backchannel diplomacy may soon produce a formal peace framework.
In a statement released on social media, Trump said most key elements of the proposed arrangement had already been settled, with only a few final issues still under discussion. He described the process as being in its final phase and hinted that an official announcement could come soon if both sides complete the remaining negotiations.
One of the central points of discussion reportedly involves the future of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil route that has remained at the centre of international concern since hostilities escalated earlier this year. Trump suggested that the emerging agreement would ensure smooth passage through the strategic waterway, potentially calming disruptions that have rattled global energy markets.
However, Iranian media reports appeared to challenge that interpretation, claiming Tehran would continue to exercise authority over the passage and dismissing suggestions that outside powers would gain operational control.
The proposed understanding is also believed to address Iran’s nuclear activities. Reports from US officials suggest Tehran may agree to reduce or transfer portions of its highly enriched uranium stockpile, although technical details would likely be resolved in later negotiations.
Iran has consistently denied seeking nuclear weapons, maintaining that its atomic programme serves civilian energy and research purposes. Tehran has also insisted that any agreement must include relief from economic sanctions and guarantees against future military action.
Pakistan has emerged as a key diplomatic intermediary in recent weeks, hosting and facilitating several rounds of indirect talks between American and Iranian representatives. Officials familiar with the process described the negotiations as constructive, with visible progress made toward ending hostilities.
Regional leaders from the Gulf and South Asia have also urged both countries to seize the opportunity for a diplomatic settlement, warning that prolonged instability could trigger wider consequences for international trade and security.
Despite the positive signals, Iranian officials have cautioned that several sensitive issues remain unresolved. These include sanctions relief, maritime access, and broader regional security concerns involving Lebanon and Israel.
Trump also confirmed he had recently spoken with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, calling the discussion productive and saying all sides remained engaged as efforts continue to secure a lasting settlement.
Diplomatic observers say the coming days will be crucial in determining whether the current momentum results in a formal accord or slips back into confrontation.
