New York (National Times): In a dramatic social media post, former President Donald Trump claimed credit for brokering a landmark peace agreement between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, two nations locked in decades of bloody conflict. The treaty, which he said will be signed in Washington early next week, was hailed by Trump as “a great day for Africa.”
The deal was arranged with the assistance of Secretary of State Marco Rubio, according to Trump, and aims to finally bring an end to one of the continent’s longest and most deadly disputes. Trump did not reveal specific terms of the agreement or whether independent observers would oversee its implementation.
However, the bulk of Trump’s post focused on what he sees as a long-standing slight by the Nobel Committee. “I won’t get a Nobel Peace Prize for this,” he wrote, adding that his efforts to resolve tensions in India-Pakistan, Egypt-Ethiopia, Serbia-Kosovo, and the Middle East had similarly gone unrecognized.
Trump criticized the U.S. funding of a massive Ethiopian dam project as “stupid” and reiterated his belief that the Abraham Accords were a blueprint for future Middle East peace. He also hinted at efforts to resolve conflicts involving Russia and Ukraine, and Israel and Iran.
Despite his evident frustration, Trump closed on a defiant note: “The people know, and that’s all that matters to me.”
