Amritsar (Gurpreet Singh): The presentation of a Siropa to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi during his recent visit to Gurdwara Baba Budha Sahib Ji has triggered a fresh controversy in Punjab. Gandhi, who was in the state on September 15 to review flood-hit areas, was felicitated by gurdwara management representatives, a move that has since drawn criticism from Sikh organizations.
Following the uproar, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has taken official notice of the matter. SGPC President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami confirmed that an investigation is underway. “Our code of conduct clearly states that Siropas are reserved for spiritual figures, ragis, and Sikh icons. Offering it to political leaders is prohibited. Any violation of these guidelines will be dealt with seriously,” Dhami said in a statement.
He further emphasized that the incident at Gurdwara Baba Budha Sahib Ji will be thoroughly examined and responsibility fixed. “Once the report is finalized, those found guilty will face strict disciplinary measures,” he added.
Many Sikh bodies expressed concern, stating that conferring the traditional honor on political leaders undermines Sikh maryada and sets an undesirable precedent.
The SGPC has assured the community that corrective steps will be taken to uphold the sanctity of religious practices.
