New Delhi, March 7, 2025: The Delhi government is set to introduce a cruise service on the Yamuna River, aiming to boost tourism and promote sustainable transportation in the capital. The project, expected to begin by the end of 2025, will offer a scenic route between Sonia Vihar (Wazirabad Barrage) and Jagatpur (Shani Temple), covering 7-8 km.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to rejuvenate the Yamuna, making the river more accessible and enjoyable for locals and tourists. The cruise boats will be powered by electric-solar hybrid technology, ensuring minimal environmental impact while providing a smooth and quiet ride.
A New Tourism Experience for Delhi
Officials say the cruise will provide a unique perspective of Delhi’s skyline, historic monuments, and riverfront developments. Similar to river cruises in other major cities, such as London’s Thames cruises, passengers will be able to enjoy a guided experience highlighting key landmarks along the route. However, unlike the large, luxury cruise vessels seen in London, the Yamuna cruise boats will accommodate 20-30 passengers and focus on an intimate, eco-friendly journey.
The boats will feature air-conditioned cabins, bio-toilets, and essential safety measures, ensuring a comfortable ride. Plans include at least four daily round trips, with future expansions depending on demand and river conditions.
A Step Towards River Rejuvenation
The Delhi government has been working on cleaning the Yamuna, and this project is seen as a way to integrate tourism with environmental conservation. Authorities believe that by making the river a point of attraction, people will become more invested in keeping it clean.
