New Delhi, October 18, 2025: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has announced changes in metro train timings for Diwali, with extended morning operations on Sunday and early closure on Diwali night to facilitate smooth travel and ensure safety during celebrations.
According to DMRC, metro services on the Pink, Magenta, and Grey Lines will start at 6 a.m. on Sunday, October 19, instead of the regular 7 a.m. Sunday schedule. The decision aims to handle the expected surge in commuters ahead of the festival.
On Diwali day, Monday, October 20, the last trains from all terminal stations — including the Airport Express Line — will leave at 10 p.m., an hour earlier than usual. Services throughout the day will follow regular schedules on all lines.
DMRC stated that the adjustment is being made due to increased public movement across the national capital, especially around major celebration venues.
This year, Delhi will host a grand “Deepotsav” celebration at Kartavya Path from 6 p.m. onwards. Organised by the Delhi government, the event will feature the lighting of 1.51 lakh diyas, a Ram Katha, drone shows, and various cultural performances.
In a post on X, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta described the event as “a cultural awakening of Hindu festivals” and “a moment of resurgence of faith, self-pride, and eternal tradition.” She invited citizens to witness the city’s first divine Deepotsav, calling it a historic moment.
Diwali, or Deepawali, is celebrated as the festival of lights symbolising the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness. The festival marks Lord Rama’s return to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana, as told in the Ramayana. Families decorate their homes with diyas and lights, worship Goddess Lakshmi, exchange gifts, and celebrate with sweets and firecrackers.
This year, Diwali will be observed on the intervening night of October 20 and 21.
