Delhi BJP MLA Mohan Singh Bisht Proposes Renaming Mustafabad to ‘Shiv Vihar’ or ‘Shiv Puri’

New Delhi, February 9, 2025: BJP MLA-elect Mohan Singh Bisht has stirred controversy by proposing to rename Delhi’s Mustafabad constituency to either “Shiv Vihar” or “Shiv Puri,” arguing that the area has a Hindu majority. The move has sparked political backlash, particularly as Mustafabad is one of the few Muslim-majority constituencies in Delhi.

Bisht, who won the seat by defeating AAP’s Adeel Ahmad Khan by 17,578 votes, claimed that 58% of Mustafabad’s population is Hindu, justifying his demand for a name change. However, he did not provide official data to support this claim. “It is the right of the 58% that the name should be changed accordingly,” Bisht stated.

His remarks have added to speculation about his potential candidacy for the Delhi Chief Minister’s post after the BJP’s decisive victory in the Assembly elections. Responding to questions about his chances, Bisht remained diplomatic, stating that he is a dedicated party worker and will support whoever is chosen by the BJP leadership.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) swiftly condemned the renaming proposal, with MLA Amanatullah Khan accusing the BJP of indulging in divisive politics instead of focusing on governance. “Instead of doing such things, the BJP should start working positively and avoid negativity,” Khan remarked.

This election marked the BJP’s return to power in Delhi after 27 years, ending AAP’s decade-long rule. The Congress, once a dominant force in the capital, failed to win a single seat. With Mustafabad’s renaming now emerging as a political flashpoint, the proposal is likely to face resistance, particularly in a city known for its religious and cultural diversity.
