Decade of Drug Deaths: Canada Faces Deepening Crisis as Punjab Battles Smaller but Persistent Challenge

Chandigarh/British Columbia (Gurpreet Singh/Rajeev Sharma): A decade-long comparison of overdose fatalities reveals a striking disparity between Canada and Punjab, with Canada confronting a far more extensive and deadly drug epidemic.

Since 2016, when British Columbia declared a public health emergency over rising overdose deaths, the country has lost approximately 18,000 people to drug-related causes. The province continues to remain at the centre of the crisis, marking the 10-year milestone with remembrance events and renewed calls for stronger interventions.

Community groups such as Moms Stop the Harm and Doctors for Safer Drug Policy have organised public gatherings, awareness drives, and discussions to honour victims while pressing authorities for expanded harm-reduction measures.

Although recent data indicates a slight dip in annual fatalities, the numbers remain alarmingly high, reflecting the long-term impact of synthetic opioids like fentanyl that continue to drive the crisis.

In comparison, Punjab’s overdose figures remain significantly lower. According to data from the National Crime Records Bureau, the state has reported deaths in the range of a few dozen to over a hundred annually in recent years. While modest in scale, these numbers have kept the issue in the spotlight, triggering political debate and public concern.

The drug menace in Punjab continues to be a contentious issue, with demands for tighter policing, improved rehabilitation facilities, and stricter monitoring of trafficking networks. Authorities maintain that efforts are underway to curb the problem, but critics argue that more aggressive action is needed.

Analysts point out that while Canada is dealing with a large-scale public health emergency affecting multiple communities, Punjab’s challenge lies in preventing the situation from escalating further. The comparison highlights how different regions are grappling with the same issue at vastly different magnitudes, yet both require sustained attention and policy focus to safeguard lives.
