Chandigarh, June 8, 2025: On the 99th day of its aggressive anti-drug campaign Yudh Nashian Virudh, Punjab Police arrested 144 drug smugglers and seized 6.7 kilograms of heroin and 440 kilograms of poppy husk in a massive statewide crackdown. This takes the total number of drug-related arrests to 16,492 since the campaign was launched under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann.
The intensive operation was carried out across all 28 police districts on the directions of Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav. Over 200 police teams comprising 1,400 personnel conducted raids at 479 locations, registering 107 FIRs and checking 541 suspicious individuals, according to Special DGP (Law and Order) Arpit Shukla.
The Special DGP noted that the Mann-led government is strictly implementing a three-tier strategy of Enforcement, De-addiction, and Prevention (EDP) to root out the drug menace. As part of the campaign’s rehabilitation efforts, 89 individuals agreed to undergo de-addiction and rehabilitation treatment on Sunday alone.
In a parallel administrative push, the Punjab government has formed a five-member Cabinet Sub-Committee, chaired by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, to monitor the state’s anti-drug efforts and ensure coordinated implementation at the district level. Chief Minister Mann has already directed all Commissioners of Police, Deputy Commissioners, and Senior Superintendents of Police to work relentlessly toward transforming Punjab into a drug-free state.
The Punjab Police reiterated their commitment to continue the momentum until narcotics are completely eradicated from the state.
