Fazilka (Gurpreet Singh): In a targeted operation based on intelligence input, Fazilka Police have successfully dismantled a cross-border weapon smuggling module with alleged links to Pakistan. Two individuals have been taken into custody, and a cache of foreign-made firearms has been seized before it could reach criminal elements in Punjab.
The arrested accused — Surinder Singh and Gurpreet — were reportedly acting under the instructions of handlers operating from outside India. Their mission was to deliver the smuggled weapons to members of local gangs within the state, authorities said.
Arms Cache Recovered
During the operation, police recovered five pistols of foreign origin (.30 bore) along with nine magazines. These weapons, according to initial findings, were smuggled into India through international networks believed to be operating out of Pakistan.
Police officials revealed that the weapons were to be supplied to operatives associated with organized criminal groups in Punjab, highlighting the continued threat posed by cross-border arms trafficking.
Investigation Launched into Wider Network
An FIR has been registered at Sadar Fazilka Police Station under relevant sections of the Arms Act. Police have begun a deeper investigation to identify the full scope of the smuggling operation, including those responsible for sourcing and transporting the weapons, as well as the intended recipients on Indian soil.
Authorities are also working to trace the communication trail between the arrested individuals and their handlers abroad to determine the level of coordination involved in the arms transfer.
Ongoing Fight Against Organized Smuggling
This development comes amid growing concerns over the use of cross-border routes to funnel illegal arms into India. Fazilka, a border district, has seen increased surveillance in recent months as part of broader efforts by Punjab Police to counter such threats.
A senior police official emphasized that law enforcement remains vigilant against such activities. “This arrest is a result of proactive policing and close coordination among intelligence units. We will continue to take strong action against those attempting to smuggle weapons and destabilize public safety,” the official said.
The Punjab Police have reiterated their commitment to dismantling smuggling networks and preventing weapons from falling into the hands of criminal groups operating within the state.
