Comedy Under Threat: Maheep Singh’s Dehradun Show Cancelled Amid Protests

Dehradun (National Times): A scheduled performance by stand-up comedian Maheep Singh was cancelled in Dehradun after a group of protesters surrounded the mall venue, issuing threats over what they deemed his “vulgar” brand of comedy. In a video statement posted on social media, Maheep clarified that the protesters had never watched his act, yet targeted him and the venue’s management with intimidation, compelling cancellation due to safety concerns.
Maheep, known for his viral “Mummy Kaisi Hai” sketches and his role on India’s Got Latent, revealed that the protesters were affiliated with a prominent group with a religious reference in its name, a detail he chose to withhold on social media, citing rising intolerance.
Despite the setback, Maheep remained composed, thanking fans for their continued support and emphasizing the need for dialogue, not suppression. “This isn’t about a single show,” he said. “It’s about a climate where artists can no longer speak freely without fear.”
The incident highlights a troubling trend for India’s creative community, where comedians, writers, and performers are increasingly facing extreme censorship and public outrage even before a punchline is delivered. As conversations around free speech, artistic freedom, and public tolerance gain momentum, Maheep Singh’s experience in Dehradun may become a pivotal moment in the ongoing debate over the future of stand-up comedy in India.
