Jalandhar (National Times): Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, along with thousands of mourners, paid an emotional farewell to Fauja Singh, the world-renowned centenarian marathon runner, who passed away on July 14 after being struck by a speeding vehicle in his native village.

The cremation, held in Fauja Singh’s ancestral village, drew an outpouring of grief from the public, sports enthusiasts, and government officials alike. CM Mann placed floral wreaths on the body and hailed Singh’s life as an enduring example of perseverance and discipline.

“A Symbol of Patience and Strength”

Remembering Fauja Singh as the world’s oldest marathon runner, Mann said, “At 114, he wasn’t just an athlete — he was a living symbol of patience, commitment, and contentment. His remarkable journey will forever inspire our youth to dream big and strive harder.”

The Chief Minister emphasized that Singh’s extraordinary contributions had elevated the prestige of Punjab and the Sikh community globally. “He brought unparalleled recognition to our state through sheer will and his passion for long-distance running,” he added.

Permanent Honours Announced

To commemorate Fauja Singh’s legacy, CM Mann announced several tribute measures:

  • The government school in his village will be renamed after him.
  • Statues of Fauja Singh will be installed at the village stadium and at the Sports College in Jalandhar, serving as lasting symbols of his impact on athletics.

“These steps are not just in memory of Fauja Singh Ji,” said Mann, “but a message to generations that age is no barrier to dreams, and discipline is the path to glory.”

Mourning Across the Sports World

Expressing heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, CM Mann noted that the global sports fraternity had lost a true icon. “His passing has left a void that cannot be filled. Fauja Singh was more than an athlete — he was a spiritual force in motion,” Mann said.

Also present at the ceremony were Cabinet Minister Mahendra Bhagat and other dignitaries, who joined the community in mourning and paying their final respects.

Fauja Singh’s inspiring journey — from taking up running in his 80s to completing international marathons past the age of 100 — has left behind a legacy that transcends borders and generations.
