Mohali, September 12 – Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, addressing the media after being discharged from hospital, pledged that every affected family will receive timely compensation for losses caused by the recent floods. He stressed that he will not rest until cheques are delivered directly into the hands of victims.
Mann said he had convened a meeting with top officials, where strict instructions were issued to conduct girdawari (damage assessment) across affected areas. “I will not sleep peacefully until the compensation reaches the people,” he remarked, recalling his earlier announcement of ₹20,000 per acre compensation for damaged crops the highest such relief package in Punjab’s history.
The Chief Minister emphasized that the relief would not remain a mere promise. “Unlike previous governments, when farmers received as little as ₹26 in compensation, this time cheques are already prepared and will be distributed without delay,” he said. Officials have been directed to assess damage to crops, homes, and livestock in villages where floodwaters have receded.
Mann announced a timeline of 30 to 40 days for completing the survey in every village. After records are prepared, affected families will be given a week to review and flag discrepancies. “Often, those who suffer the most are left out, while others manage to get benefits through influence. This time, no such injustice will be allowed,” he asserted.
The Chief Minister added that families with 100% crop loss would receive compensation within a month, while those whose houses were damaged would also be fully supported. The standard State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) relief of ₹6,800 per house will be increased to ₹40,000. For livestock losses, the aid has been fixed at ₹3,700. He further announced that families unable to live in their homes due to water damage will also receive complete assistance.
Updating on the human toll, Mann confirmed that 55 people have died in the floods so far. Compensation has already been provided to the families of 42 victims, while efforts are underway to trace other victims and their legal heirs.
“Being a farmer’s son, I understand this pain deeply,” Mann said, assuring that his government will not allow “a single kitchen in Punjab to go cold” due to the disaster.
