‘Choosing Local Can Make A Difference’: Alberta Official Marks Small Business Week

Edmonton (Rajeev Sharma): Alberta is encouraging residents to support local entrepreneurs as the province prepares to mark Small Business Week 2026. Parliamentary Secretary for Small Business and Northern Development Tany Yao has highlighted the role of small businesses in creating jobs, strengthening communities and supporting the provincial economy.

In a statement issued on October 16, Yao called on Albertans to recognise the people behind local businesses and make an effort to support them. Suggested ways to show support include shopping locally, recommending Alberta businesses and thanking small business owners for their contributions.

Yao said small businesses often begin with an entrepreneur taking a risk on an idea and developing it into a business that serves the wider community. Beyond their commercial role, he said, these enterprises help create local employment and foster stronger connections between residents.

Why Is Small Business Week Important In Alberta?

Small Business Week provides an opportunity to recognise entrepreneurs, innovators and business owners whose work contributes to local economies.

According to Yao, small businesses can be an important starting point for young people entering the workforce. They also support community life, including by backing local teams and initiatives.

He said Alberta’s economic success depends on the people who build and sustain businesses across the province. The statement also pointed to Alberta’s employment growth and economic expansion as part of the wider context for recognising small businesses.

The government’s message is that supporting local enterprises can help retain economic activity within communities while giving entrepreneurs opportunities to grow.

Tany Yao Urges Albertans To Support Local Businesses

Yao encouraged residents to take practical steps to support businesses in their neighbourhoods during Small Business Week.

These steps do not necessarily require major spending. Residents can recommend a local business to friends, choose an Alberta-based business when making purchases or acknowledge the work of entrepreneurs who serve their communities.

The parliamentary secretary said such gestures can make a difference to business owners and help sustain the enterprises that create jobs and contribute to local economic activity.

His message also placed small businesses within Alberta’s broader economic ambitions, highlighting their role in innovation, employment and community development.

Small Businesses And Alberta’s Economic Growth

Small businesses contribute to the economy through employment, services, entrepreneurship and local investment. They can also provide opportunities for people to gain work experience and develop skills, particularly at the beginning of their careers.

Yao described small businesses as more than commercial establishments, emphasising their connection to the communities in which they operate. Local entrepreneurs often build relationships with customers, suppliers and community organisations while responding to needs in their areas.

The statement also highlighted the importance of recognising the risks involved in running a business. Entrepreneurs invest time, resources and effort in turning ideas into operating enterprises, often relying on local customers and community support.

As Small Business Week approaches, Alberta’s message is to make support for local businesses a practical habit rather than a one-time gesture. Choosing local, recommending an entrepreneur or acknowledging a business owner’s contribution are among the actions residents can take to help sustain the businesses that form part of their communities.

The statement did not announce a new funding programme or policy measure. Instead, it focused on encouraging public participation and recognising the contribution of Alberta’s small business community.
