Beijing, April 28, 2025 — China on called on both India and Pakistan to exercise restraint and avoid escalating tensions following the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. The attack, which killed 26 civilians, has significantly strained relations between the two neighboring countries.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian, addressing a press briefing, said, “We have taken note of relevant reports. Both India and Pakistan are important countries in South Asia. We hope the two sides can exercise restraint, step up dialogue and consultation, and resolve differences peacefully.”
Lin emphasized that maintaining peace and stability in South Asia serves the common interests of the international community, suggesting that further escalation could negatively impact the region’s development and security.
The Chinese government stated it was closely monitoring the situation as India introduced strong diplomatic and economic measures against Pakistan, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty and the closure of cross-border trade routes, in response to Pakistan-backed terror groups being linked to the Pahalgam attack.
China’s call for restraint highlights Beijing’s concerns about regional instability, particularly as it maintains close strategic ties with Pakistan while simultaneously seeking stable relations with India. Observers note that China’s balanced public stance aims to prevent any deterioration in its relations with either nation at a time when geopolitical tensions globally are already high.
The Pahalgam attack, attributed to the Pakistan-based proxy group The Resistance Front (TRF), has drawn widespread international condemnation. Several countries, including the United States, France, and Australia, have expressed solidarity with India and condemned cross-border terrorism.
China’s appeal underscores the importance of diplomatic engagement over military confrontation at a time when South Asia’s fragile peace appears increasingly under threat.
