China Backs Pakistan, Calls for Calm as India-Pakistan Tensions Rise

New Delhi (National Times): After the Pahalgam Attack, China has thrown its weight behind Pakistan, voicing support for its sovereignty and security amid escalating tensions with India following the Pahalgam terror attack.

In a phone call on Sunday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi assured his Pakistani counterpart, Ishaq Dar, that Beijing remains a firm supporter of Pakistan’s counterterrorism efforts and its national security imperatives. He also called for an “impartial investigation” into the terror attack that claimed 26 lives.

The situation between India and Pakistan has rapidly deteriorated since the attack, with India moving to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty and shut down the land crossing at Attari, and Pakistan threatening countermeasures, including the closure of its airspace to Indian aircraft.

“China fully supports Pakistan’s right to defend its sovereignty and security,” Wang said, according to a foreign ministry readout. “We urge both nations to exercise restraint and engage constructively to prevent further deterioration.”

Beijing’s intervention highlights growing concerns over regional stability, as South Asia faces a fresh round of diplomatic and military brinkmanship. Wang emphasized that ongoing conflict would hurt both nations’ interests and the broader regional peace, advocating dialogue as the only viable solution.
