Chhatbir Zoo Marks World Sparrow Day with Awareness Drive on Sparrow Conservation

Zirakpur, March 20, 2025: Today on 20th March 2025 Chhatbir Zoo celebrated World Sparrow Day by organizing an awareness campaign among students and zoo visitors at the entry gate of the zoo where Zoo staff with the collaboration with the Chandigarh Group of Collage, Landraan (CGC) interacted all the visitors personally and sensitized them about the conservation of Sparrows particularly house sparrows.

Diminutive house sparrow (Passer domesticus) is perhaps one of the earliest birds you can remember from your childhood. Their nests were spotted almost in every house hold as well as public places like bus bays and railway stations, where they lived in colonies and survived on food grains and tiny worms. The association between humans and the house sparrow dates back to several centuries and no other bird has been associated with humans on a daily basis like the house sparrow. It is a bird that evokes fond memories and has thus found mention in folklore and songs from time immemorial.

Unfortunately, the house sparrow is now a disappearing species. But like all other plants and animals which were once abundant and are now facing an uncertain future, their numbers are also declining across their natural range. The reasons? Certainly, there is no one single reason for the decline of house sparrow. Its disappearance has been labelled as one of the biggest mysteries of recent times.

The house sparrow is believed to be declining for various reasons ranging from the destruction of its habitat to lack of insects to feed the young and even the increasing electromagnetic wave pollution from technological advancements.

So, it is high time for the mankind to understand the importance of sparrows and other birds in country and do their bit in the noble cause of conservation. The zoo plays a pivotal role as far as awareness generation of wildlife in general and birds in particulars are concerned.

It becomes more relevant in the area of country where Sparrow population is declining day by day in natural areas like Punjab, Haryana etc.  So, people in this area need to be specifically made aware about the need and importance of conservation. Thus, today’s celebration of World Sparrow Day in Chhatbir zoo plays a significant role in creation of awareness in the young minds about conservation with the help of Chandigarh Group of Collage, Landraan (CGC). Director Principal Dr Vimal’ HOD Dr Manoj and coordinator Ms. Deepali Sharma specially participated with the motivated and sensitized students who made this campaign successful with lots of efforts like posters, placards and personal interaction with the visitors. Field Director Chhatbir Zoo Mr. Neeraj Kumar PFS also participated along with his team to motivate and support this event told Mr. Harpal Singh PRO(WL) cum Zoo Education Officer.
