Chestermere Bazurg Society with Dawson Landing Dental Celebrates Indian Independence Day

CHESTERMERE (Rajeev Sharma): The Chestermere Punjabi Bazurg (Seniors) Society, in association with Dawson Landing Dental, celebrated India’s Independence Day with a special community gathering at the MPP Hall of the Chestermere Recreation Centre. Around 80 members and guests participated in the inspiring celebration of patriotism, culture, health awareness and community fellowship.

The program began with Society Secretary Gurmeet Singh Gill welcoming members and guests. In a respectful display of pride in both nations, attendees stood before the Indian Tricolour and Canadian flag and sang India’s national anthem, “Jana Gana Mana,” followed by Canada’s national anthem, “O Canada.”

Sukhdev Singh Bhura Kohna spoke about India’s freedom struggle and explained the significance of the colours of the Indian national flag. He expressed pride in the achievements of Punjabis who have established themselves around the world and emphasized the importance of preserving cultural values, unity and heritage for future generations.

A special health-awareness segment was presented by Dr. Rajeev Sharma and Romita of Dawson Landing Dental, who discussed common dental problems, preventive care, treatment options and the importance of maintaining good oral health, particularly among seniors. They also provided information about Federal and Alberta dental care programs and assured attendees of their support for those requiring dental assistance.

Jyoti Shahi from Oak Dentures also addressed the gathering and provided useful information about dentures and denture care. She explained that properly fitted dentures can help restore comfortable eating and speaking while improving appearance and confidence for people who have lost some or all of their natural teeth. She highlighted the importance of proper fitting, regular cleaning, maintenance and professional adjustments to ensure comfort and oral health.

The cultural program added further energy to the celebration, with Calgary-based Master Bachittar Singh Gill entertaining the audience with his songs. Savita Singh of Universal Roots Foundation also shared her thoughts and highlighted the importance of community involvement and supporting seniors.

Special guest Rishi Nagar of Red FM congratulated the organizers for bringing together such a large gathering. He praised the enthusiasm and participation of Punjabi seniors and highlighted the valuable role seniors’ societies play in keeping older adults connected, active and engaged within the community.

Poets Gurbhej Singh Jhand and Saroop Singh Mander presented their poetry, adding a cultural and literary touch to the event. Anita, representing Royal Indian Super Market, distributed gift cards among attendees.

Dawson Landing Dental Manager Romita arranged food and refreshments for the gathering and expressed appreciation for the society’s efforts to create opportunities for seniors to come together and celebrate their heritage.

Concluding the event, Society President Janak Singh Khurmi thanked all members, guests and supporters for their enthusiastic participation, with special appreciation for the strong presence of women members and female guests. He also acknowledged the support of Dawson Landing Dental, Oak Dentures, Royal Indian Super Market, Universal Roots Foundation, Red FM, Master Bachittar Singh Gill, and Team National Times for their valuable support and participation.

Gurraj Singh Virk conducted the stage proceedings, Tarlochan Singh Rai managed attendance, and Jagraj Singh Gill handled photography and videography. Society Directors Gurmel Singh Gill and Hardeep Singh Grewal were also present.

The celebration reflected the Chestermere Punjabi Bazurg Society’s ongoing commitment to bringing seniors together, preserving cultural traditions and promoting community well-being. The gathering demonstrated how cultural celebrations can also provide valuable opportunities for seniors to learn about healthcare, connect with community organizations and enjoy an active and engaged social life.
