Chaos Erupts at Liverpool FC Parade as Car Strikes Crowd, Injuring Nearly 50

Liverpool (National Times): Celebrations in Liverpool turned to horror on Monday evening when a car drove into a crowd of fans during Liverpool FC’s Premier League victory parade, leaving nearly 50 people injured, including several children.

The incident occurred on Water Street in the city centre, close to the Royal Liver Building and Liverpool Town Hall, just after roads had reopened following the conclusion of the main parade. Authorities confirmed that a 53-year-old white British man, believed to be the driver, was arrested at the scene.

The atmosphere had been jubilant as thousands gathered to cheer the club’s title win, but joy quickly gave way to panic and confusion around 6pm when the vehicle struck pedestrians. Emergency responders rushed to the area, which was quickly cordoned off.

According to North West Ambulance Service, 27 people were transported to local hospitals, with two, including a child, suffering serious injuries. An additional 20 individuals received treatment at the scene. In total, four children were among those hurt.

Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims of Merseyside Police stated that the incident is not being treated as an act of terrorism and that no other suspects are being sought.

Former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak condemned the incident, describing the scenes as “appalling,” while Liverpool FC extended its sympathies, saying the club’s “thoughts and prayers” were with those affected.

Footage from the aftermath shows emergency vehicles and police cordons surrounding a heavily littered stretch of road. A fire engine and multiple ambulances were deployed, and emotional scenes included a person being stretchered away and another leaning on a police officer for support.

Eyewitness Les Winsper, 55, recounted the terrifying moment: “People started banging on the car windows. Then they smashed them, and the driver panicked. He floored it, hit someone who went into the air, and just drove through the rest. I’ve never seen anything like it.”

An investigation is ongoing as authorities work to understand the circumstances leading up to the incident.
