Chandigarh Witnesses a Mesmerizing Showcase of Kerala’s Traditional and Folk Dances

Chandigarh, February 11, 2025: The Kerala Tourism Department organized a grand cultural event in Chandigarh, bringing the state’s rich folk and classical art forms to life. Held at The Lalit Chandigarh, the event captivated an audience of over 200 with breathtaking performances of Theyyam, Mohiniyattam, Kathakali, and Kalaripayattu.

The evening commenced with Mohiniyattam, a graceful dance inspired by Lord Vishnu’s female avatar, Mohini. Dancers, dressed in elegant white and gold attire, enchanted spectators with their fluid expressions and delicate movements.

Following this, Theyyam, known for its elaborate masks and dramatic storytelling, enthralled the audience. The energy continued with Kathakali, a dance-drama distinguished by its vibrant green face makeup and intense expressions. The event also showcased Kalaripayattu, India’s ancient martial art, where skilled performers demonstrated their powerful combat techniques.

As part of its evolving tourism strategy, Kerala Tourism is now highlighting the state’s cultural heritage beyond its beaches and backwaters. Tourism Minister P.A. Mohammed Riyas emphasized, “We aim to position Kerala as a holistic tourism destination, offering travelers everything from houseboat experiences and adventure activities to rich cultural and historical explorations.”

Kerala Tourism Director, IAS Sikha Surendran, reiterated that such events play a crucial role in establishing Kerala as a diverse travel hub, blending nature, adventure, and tradition seamlessly.
