Chandigarh Pushes PNG Adoption, Urges Shift from LPG in Fully Covered Sectors

Chandigarh (Naval Kishore) — The Chandigarh Administration has accelerated the expansion of its Piped Natural Gas (PNG) network across the city, urging residents in fully covered sectors to transition from LPG to PNG to ensure uninterrupted and safer cooking fuel access.
According to the advisory, PNG infrastructure is now fully operational in Sectors 32 to 38, 40, 42 to 44, 46 and 48 to 51. Partial availability has been reported in sectors including 10, 11, 17, 22, 26, 28, 30, 41, 47, as well as Manimajra and Industrial Area Phases I and II. Residents in these partially covered areas have been advised to check connection feasibility with service providers.
The administration highlighted multiple benefits of PNG, including continuous supply through pipelines, eliminating the need for cylinder bookings and refills. It also emphasised improved safety, noting that PNG, being lighter than air, disperses quickly in case of leakage, reducing fire risks. The fuel operates at lower pressure and removes the need to store bulky cylinders, making it especially convenient for elderly residents and those in apartments.
Cost efficiency is another key advantage, with PNG operating on a pay-as-you-use billing system, without requiring deposits for cylinders or refilling costs.
Importantly, the advisory references the Natural Gas and Petroleum Products Distribution Order 2026 issued by the Government of India, which mandates that LPG supply for domestic use will be discontinued within three months in areas where PNG infrastructure has been fully commissioned. Residents in such sectors have been urged to switch promptly to avoid disruption in fuel supply.
For new connections or migration assistance, residents can contact the customer care services of Indian Oil Corporation Limited’s joint venture partner.
The administration has called for public cooperation in adopting PNG as part of efforts to build a safer, more efficient and environmentally responsible urban energy system.
