Chandigarh, November 2, 2025 — The Chandigarh Press Club on Sunday condemned the police action of stopping vehicles carrying newspapers across several districts of Punjab, calling it a serious assault on press freedom and an attempt to restrict the free flow of information.
According to the Press Club, newspaper distribution across the state was severely hampered due to intensive police checks on vehicles transporting publications. In some areas, vehicles were reportedly taken to police stations, leading to harassment of delivery staff and delays in newspaper circulation.
Incidents of disruption were reported from multiple districts, including Gurdaspur, Patiala, Amritsar, and Hoshiarpur, where newspaper delivery was either delayed or completely blocked.
“The Chandigarh Press Club condemns these actions in the strongest terms and urges the Punjab Government to immediately intervene, ensure unhindered newspaper distribution, and uphold the constitutional right to press freedom,” the statement said.
The Club also emphasized that such restrictions undermine democratic values and violate the citizens’ right to access unbiased information.
