Chandigarh (Gurpreet Singh): Following recent firing incidents reported in parts of Punjab, Chandigarh Police have significantly enhanced security arrangements across the Union Territory, carrying out an extensive overnight operation aimed at preventing any potential criminal activity.
The city witnessed heightened police presence as security personnel established checkpoints at strategic locations, including major roads leading into Chandigarh. Vehicles entering and leaving the city were subjected to detailed verification, with officers checking identification documents and inspecting suspicious vehicles.
In addition to roadside surveillance, police teams carried out coordinated inspections at nightlife destinations, including clubs, pubs and bars. Officials monitored compliance with closing-time regulations while verifying the identities of visitors and staff present at these establishments.
Police sources said the operation was planned as a preventive exercise after intelligence inputs suggested that criminal elements often attempt to use neighbouring urban areas as transit points following incidents in Punjab. Officers questioned several individuals whose activities appeared unusual, while some were taken for further verification as part of routine security procedures.
The drive was supervised by senior officials of the Operation Cell, with multiple teams deployed simultaneously across different sectors of the city. Authorities said the objective was to reassure the public while maintaining strict vigilance against any possible security threat.
Apart from entertainment venues, additional police personnel were stationed at markets, transport terminals, hotels, religious places and other crowded public locations. Mobile patrol units and PCR teams also increased their rounds throughout the night to strengthen surveillance.
Police officials said the intensified checking campaign will continue over the coming days, with regular inspections and area domination exercises planned to ensure law and order. Residents have been urged to remain alert and immediately report any suspicious activity to the police.
