Chandigarh Authorities Restrict Stray Dog Feeding to 200 Fixed Points Amid Rise in Rabies Cases

Chandigarh, December 11, 2025: The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has announced strict new rules regulating the feeding of stray dogs in the city, following a rise in rabies cases and clear directives from the Supreme Court. Under the updated guidelines, residents are no longer permitted to feed stray dogs outside their homes, on streets, or at any unauthorized place. Anyone violating these rules will face heavy penalties.

The municipal body has designated 200 fixed feeding points across the city under the ‘Municipal Corporation Chandigarh Pet and Community Dog Bylaws–2025’. Each sector will now contain around four to five approved feeding locations. These points were selected after extensive field surveys, keeping in mind pedestrian movement, road safety, and existing dog patterns to avoid conflicts between residents and stray animals.

Residents, RWAs, and social groups have been invited to submit suggestions or objections within the next seven days. Any new feeding spot recommendation must include a clear justification and meet conditions such as being away from playgrounds, free of traffic risk, and already known as a gathering spot for stray dogs.

Citizens can view the designated points for their sector on the municipal corporation’s official website, where all feeding locations have been listed along with landmarks and GPS coordinates. The details are accessible through the “Draft Community Dog Feeding Points–Public Suggestions Invited” link.

This move follows the Supreme Court’s strong directions to address increasing dog attacks and rising rabies cases across the country. The court instructed all cities to ensure sterilization programmes and create designated feeding zones. Acting promptly, the Chandigarh administration has now rolled out its policy in compliance with these national guidelines.
