Centre to Transfer Rs 1,600 Crore Flood Relief Directly to Punjab Farmers, Skipping State Govt

Chandigarh, September 27, 2025: Union Minister B.L. Verma announced on Saturday that the ₹1,600 crore flood relief package for Punjab will be deposited directly into farmers’ bank accounts, bypassing the state government. He assured that disbursement would begin promptly once surveys are completed and added that extra assistance would be provided if necessary.

The Centre’s decision follows sharp criticism from Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Finance Minister Harpal Cheema, who alleged on Friday that not a single rupee from the package had reached the state. They accused the Modi government of undermining the state’s role, sparking a renewed political confrontation.

The relief package was originally announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to flood-affected regions earlier this year. While the Centre projected it as a major step to aid recovery, the Punjab government dismissed the allocation as insufficient given the widespread destruction caused by the floods.

The decision to directly credit funds to farmers is expected to fuel further tensions between the Centre and the state, as both sides remain at odds over compensation mechanisms and long-term rehabilitation plans.
