Centre Reverses Decision to Dissolve Panjab University Senate After Strong Opposition

Chandigarh, November 5, 2025 — The Central Government has officially withdrawn its notification that dissolved the Panjab University Senate, reversing an earlier decision that had drawn widespread criticism.

The move follows strong objections from political leaders, academic associations, and student unions, who argued that the dissolution violated the university’s autonomous character and was inconsistent with constitutional principles.

The Punjab Government had earlier declared its intention to contest the decision in the High Court, stating that the Centre’s action undermined the state’s role in the functioning of the university.

By restoring the Senate, the government has defused a growing confrontation over control of one of North India’s oldest universities, reaffirming the importance of academic freedom and cooperative federalism in higher education governance.
