New Delhi, March 22, 2025 – The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has closed its probe into the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput, ruling out foul play and confirming that he died by suicide. This decision, announced on Saturday, comes more than four years after his death, bringing an end to the high-profile investigation that gripped the nation.
The closure report clears actress Rhea Chakraborty and her family, who were accused by Rajput’s family of abetment to suicide and financial fraud. The CBI found no evidence supporting these claims.
Rajput, 34, was found hanging in his Bandra apartment on June 14, 2020. His death sparked widespread speculation, with theories ranging from Bollywood nepotism to criminal conspiracy.
A senior CBI official stated that after an exhaustive investigation, which included forensic analysis, technical evidence from the US, and multiple medical opinions, no conspiracy was found in the actor’s death.
The CBI took over the probe in 2020 after Rajput’s father filed a case with Bihar Police, alleging that Chakraborty and her family embezzled ₹15 crore and pressured Rajput into suicide. Chakraborty later filed a counter-case against Rajput’s sister Priyanka Singh, accusing her of illegally procuring psychiatric drugs for the actor.
The agency examined dozens of witnesses, including Rajput’s friends, staff, doctors, and Bollywood personalities. It also sought digital evidence from Google and Facebook but found nothing suspicious.
A medical board from AIIMS Delhi had earlier concluded that Rajput’s death was due to asphyxia from hanging, with no injuries or struggle marks.
The CBI’s decision aligns with the Mumbai Police’s initial findings, which also ruled out foul play. Despite years of speculation, the investigation confirms that Rajput’s death was a case of suicide, putting an end to one of India’s most debated legal cases.
