Carney, Trump Hold Strategic Talks on Middle East, Trade and Bilateral Ties

Ottawa/Washington (Rajeev Sharma): Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and US President Donald Trump engaged in high-level discussions on Sunday, addressing economic issues, trade relations, and the ongoing crisis in the Middle East. Both leaders agreed to maintain close communication amid rising regional tensions.

Carney shared details of the conversation on X (formerly Twitter), stating that the call covered developments in the Middle East, cross-border trade, and broader economic concerns. He described the exchange as constructive and reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to its allies while prioritising national interests.

The call comes after Carney’s earlier remarks during a visit to Canberra, where he suggested that Canada could not entirely rule out military involvement if the conflict in the Middle East escalates. Speaking alongside Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Carney noted that any such action would be hypothetical, but Canada would support its allies and protect its citizens.

On the recent US-Israel strikes in Iran, Carney acknowledged the operation, describing it as a stark example of the challenges facing global diplomacy. He also emphasised that Canada was not informed prior to the mission and was not asked to participate, raising concerns about unilateral action and adherence to international norms.

In addition to addressing diplomatic issues, Carney expressed concern for civilian safety and urged all parties in the conflict to follow international humanitarian rules. He also clarified that assessing the legality of the strikes would be a matter for independent review.

Meanwhile, the Canadian government has been actively assisting its citizens in the region. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand is coordinating the evacuation of over 2,000 Canadians, particularly from the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Lebanon, Israel, and Iran. Charter flights are being arranged, pending airspace approvals, to ensure their safe return home.

The conversation between Carney and Trump reflects ongoing diplomatic efforts to coordinate on security, trade, and regional stability amid the intensifying Middle East crisis.
