Ottawa (Rajeev Sharma): Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to unveil the priorities of his newly elected Liberal government today, just four days after leading the party to a fourth mandate in the federal elections.
Carney will address the media at 11 a.m. EDT and take questions, in what will be his first public remarks since his election night speech at an Ottawa hockey arena. In that speech, he promised to “chart a new course” for Canada one that reduces its heavy reliance on the United States.
One of Carney’s first orders of business is addressing growing trade tensions with the U.S. He spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday, and Trump has since announced a bilateral meeting set to happen in Washington next week though Carney’s office has not confirmed the date.
The meeting comes amid heightened anxiety about Trump’s renewed tariff threats and annexation rhetoric, which had become a defining issue of Canada’s 2025 election campaign.
According to Elections Canada, the Liberals won 168 seats down one from Monday’s count after final validation revealed a Bloc Québécois win in Quebec’s Terrebonne riding. The Conservatives secured 144 seats, the Bloc holds 23, the New Democratic Party has seven, and the Green Party retained a single seat.
Since the election, Carney has been actively engaging with world leaders, including King Charles, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, European Council President Antonio Costa, and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, reinforcing Canada’s global diplomatic presence.
As the new session of Parliament approaches, Canadians will be watching closely for the policy directions Carney sets particularly on foreign affairs, trade, and efforts to make Canada less economically vulnerable to U.S. politics.
