Canadian Police Tighten Crackdown on Punjabi-Origin Gangster; Extortion, Drugs and Illegal Arms Case Widens

Edmonton (Rajeev Sharma): Canadian authorities have intensified their action against a Punjabi-origin man accused of being part of an organised crime network after fresh investigations allegedly uncovered his links to extortion, illegal firearms and stolen luxury vehicles. The accused, who had earlier secured bail in a weapons and narcotics case, has now been arrested again and handed over to investigators in Ontario.

The accused, identified as Safaldeep Singh, first came under police scrutiny after officers stopped a speeding vehicle in Edmonton during a routine patrol. What initially appeared to be a traffic violation soon turned into a major criminal investigation when police allegedly recovered a loaded firearm and a sizeable quantity of drugs from the vehicle. Two other occupants, identified as Sandeep Singh and Divyanshu, were also taken into custody.

Although the trio later obtained interim bail, investigators continued monitoring the case. Police claim Safaldeep changed his residence after his release, raising suspicion and prompting a detailed background verification. During the probe, authorities allegedly identified him as a wanted suspect with links to the Four Brothers gang, a criminal group believed to be active in several parts of Canada.

Investigators allege the gang targeted businessmen of Indian, particularly Punjabi, origin through intimidation and extortion. According to police, victims were allegedly threatened over phone calls and online platforms, with demands for large sums of money. Authorities believe violent incidents were also used to create fear among those who refused to pay.

Police further claim Safaldeep had been under investigation in Ontario in connection with an alleged plot to attack a businessman who reportedly resisted extortion attempts. Officials say he shifted his base to Alberta after learning that investigators were closing in on him.

During follow-up searches conducted after his release on bail, officers reportedly uncovered evidence pointing towards an illegal luxury vehicle operation. Investigators allege stolen vehicles were being modified by changing their engine and chassis identification numbers before being circulated again using forged identities. These vehicles were allegedly used in various criminal activities.

Officials said the re-arrest was the result of coordinated efforts involving multiple law enforcement agencies. Intelligence gathered by regional police units, border officials and organised crime investigators helped trace the accused despite his attempts to remain out of sight.

Canadian police have reiterated that investigations into organised crime groups targeting immigrant communities will continue with greater intensity. Officials also appealed to members of the public, especially business owners facing threats or extortion demands, to report such incidents immediately so that timely legal action can be taken against those involved.
