Canadian PM Mark Carney to Visit Mexico in September for Talks with President Sheinbaum

Ottawa (Rajeev Sharma): Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is scheduled to travel to Mexico in September for discussions with President Claudia Sheinbaum, a senior official confirmed Friday.

The visit comes at a time when Canada and Mexico are working to navigate U.S. tariffs and prepare for the scheduled review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) in 2026. Goods that qualify under the 2020 trade pact, negotiated during Donald Trump’s first term, are exempt from broad tariffs, but industry-specific duties — including a 50% tariff on steel and aluminum and a 25% tariff on automobiles — continue to affect trade flows.

Carney has already sent his foreign and finance ministers to Mexico earlier this month to strengthen ties and explore opportunities for trade diversification. Sheinbaum, in turn, visited Canada during the G7 summit in Alberta in June.

Mexico remains Canada’s third-largest trading partner, after the U.S. and China, while Canada ranked as Mexico’s fifth-largest partner in 2024.
