Ottawa, June 22, 2025: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has called Iran’s nuclear program a “grave threat to international security,” voicing strong opposition to Tehran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons. His statement comes in the wake of U.S. military action against Iranian targets, which Washington claims was aimed at reducing the threat posed by Iran’s advancing nuclear capabilities.
In a post shared on social media, Carney reiterated Canada’s long-standing position that Iran must never be allowed to acquire a nuclear weapon. He acknowledged the American military strikes but emphasized that the broader Middle East remains in a state of heightened volatility.
“While U.S. military action taken last night was designed to alleviate that threat, the situation in the Middle East remains highly volatile. Stability in the region is a priority,” Carney said.
Stressing the importance of diplomacy, Carney called on all involved parties to return immediately to the negotiating table. He underscored the need for a peaceful resolution, aligning with recent consensus reached by G7 leaders in Kananaskis. According to the Canadian leader, resolving the Iranian crisis could pave the way for a wider de-escalation of hostilities across the Middle East, including a ceasefire in Gaza.
Carney’s statement reflects Canada’s dual approach—supporting measures to contain nuclear threats while promoting diplomacy as the ultimate path to lasting peace.
