Canada-U.S. Trade Talks Enter “Intense Phase” as Deadline Nears: PM Mark Carney

PM Mark Carney Praises US Role in Pushing for Ukraine Peace at Alaska Summit

Ottawa (Rajeev Sharma): Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Monday that trade negotiations with the United States have entered an “intense phase” with a critical deadline approaching this Friday.

“Canadians don’t deserve this uncertainty… they want a resolution that makes sense for Canada,” Carney said at a press conference. “These negotiations are complex, but we are standing firm for Canadian interests.”

Tariff Tensions Rise

The talks follow escalating tariff threats from U.S. President Donald Trump, who last week suggested that a trade deal with Canada might not happen.

“We haven’t really had a lot of luck with Canada,” Trump said. “I think Canada could be one where there’s just a tariff, not really a negotiation.”

The U.S. has already imposed tariffs on several Canadian goods, including:

  • 35% tariff threat on exports not complying with the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA)
  • 50% tariff on Canadian steel and aluminum
  • 10% tariff on Canadian energy and potash
  • 25% tariff on non-U.S. content in automobile imports
Trump has also threatened new levies on pharmaceuticals, lumber, and copper.

Canada Pushes Back

Despite the pressure, Canada remains committed to securing a fair agreement. Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc said during a visit to Washington last week, “We are working toward the August 1 deadline, but we will take the time necessary to get the best deal for the Canadian economy and Canadian workers.”

Carney expressed optimism, saying, “There is a landing zone that’s possible, but we have to get there. We’re standing up for Canada every step of the way.”

Canada’s Leverage

While Trump has used tariffs to pressure other trading partners, Carney believes Canada is in a stronger position due to U.S. reliance on Canadian exports, particularly energy.

“The United States and Canada can achieve great things together,” Carney emphasized. “We’ve done it before, and we can do it again, but only on fair terms for Canada.”
