Canada Reaffirms NATO Commitment, Pledges Defence Build-Up: PM Mark Carney

PM Mark Carney announces first projects to be reviewed by the new Major Projects Office

Ottawa (Rajeev Sharma): In a firm reaffirmation of Canada’s commitment to global security, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada and its NATO allies have renewed their united pledge to the Alliance and to collective defence, amid growing international tensions.

Carney, in an official statement, declared that Canada would step up its role within NATO by enhancing military capabilities, fortifying infrastructure, and increasing overall defence readiness.

“Canada and our NATO Allies have renewed our commitment to the Alliance and to our collective security. We will build up the forces, infrastructure, and defence readiness that this hinge moment demands, with Canadian workers leading the way,” the Prime Minister stated.

His remarks come amid a global reorientation of security strategies following escalations in the Middle East and rising cyber and hybrid threats. This new declaration signals Canada’s intent to not only maintain but amplify its presence and reliability as a core NATO member.

The Prime Minister emphasized that Canadian industry and labour will play a pivotal role in the upcoming build-up, suggesting a dual benefit of increased national defence capacity and job creation at home.

Carney’s comments align with NATO’s broader initiative to strengthen Eastern flank deterrence, modernize member-state military forces, and reinforce collective preparedness in response to modern security challenges.

Defence analysts have noted that Canada is likely to prioritize Arctic readiness, cyber defence infrastructure, and support for allied deployments as part of its next-phase military strategy.

More details on Canada’s specific contributions and spending commitments are expected to be unveiled at the upcoming NATO summit next month.
