Canada Post to Present New Contract Offers Ahead of Imminent Strike Deadline

Ottawa, May 21, 2025: Canada Post is set to present new contract proposals to the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) today, just days before a potential nationwide strike scheduled to commence at midnight on Friday. The union, representing over 55,000 postal workers, had issued a 72-hour strike notice earlier this week, citing concerns over working conditions and benefits.

The Crown corporation’s spokesperson, Jon Hamilton, expressed hope that the forthcoming offers would facilitate a resolution and avert service disruptions. “Hopefully we can get talks going again and get a deal,” Hamilton stated, emphasizing the organization’s commitment to reaching an agreement that addresses the needs of both employees and the corporation.

The impending strike follows a 32-day work stoppage in late 2024, which significantly impacted mail and parcel delivery across Canada. The previous strike concluded with a ministerial directive mandating both parties to return to negotiations. However, unresolved issues have resurfaced, leading to the current impasse.

Key points of contention include wage increases, job security, and the modernization of postal services. The union has expressed concerns over Canada Post’s financial strategies, particularly proposals that may affect full-time positions and daily mail delivery services.

As negotiations continue, stakeholders, including small businesses and individuals reliant on postal services, are closely monitoring developments. The potential strike poses challenges for timely deliveries, especially for essential items and services.

Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
