Canada PM Mark Carney Pays Tribute to Late Ken Dryden

Ottawa (Rajeev Sharma): Prime Minister Mark Carney has expressed deep sorrow over the death of the Honourable Ken Dryden, calling him a towering figure in Canadian sport, politics, and public life.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Carney remembered Dryden as both a hockey legend and a dedicated parliamentarian. “Ken was a six-time Stanley Cup champion, five-time Vezina Trophy winner, Minister of Social Development, and a committed MP,” the Prime Minister said.

Carney reflected on Dryden’s influence beyond the rink, noting that his decision to return to university during his playing career underscored the importance of balance. “His work after hockey showed the value of public service, particularly his early advocacy for affordable national child care,” he added.

The Prime Minister also offered a personal tribute, recalling Dryden’s unique presence in goal for the Montreal Canadiens. “He was the reason I became a goalie, though I never mastered his calm stance or ability to stop the puck,” Carney remarked.

Extending condolences on behalf of the government, Carney said: “Few Canadians have given more, or stood taller, for our country. Ken Dryden was Big Canada. And he was Best Canada. May he rest in peace.”

Dryden, who passed away Friday night, leaves behind a legacy that straddles excellence in sport, politics, and public service, inspiring generations across the nation.
