Ottawa (Rajeev Sharma): Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has expressed serious concern over the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, denouncing Tehran’s missile attacks and affirming Canada’s support for Israel’s right to self-defense.
In a strongly worded statement released earlier today, Carney said: “Iran’s nuclear program has long been a cause of grave concern, and its missile attacks across Israel threaten regional peace.”
The Prime Minister convened Canada’s National Security Council to assess the rapidly developing situation and review measures to protect Canadian citizens and diplomatic missions across the Middle East.
“Today, I convened our National Security Council to receive an update on the situation and to ensure that all necessary steps will be taken to protect our nationals and our diplomatic missions in the region,” Carney said.
He emphasized Canada’s support for Israel amid the barrage of attacks, stating, “Canada reaffirms Israel’s right to defend itself and to ensure its security.”
However, Carney also urged caution and diplomacy, calling on “all parties to exercise maximum restraint and move towards a diplomatic resolution.”
A Widening Conflict
Carney’s remarks come as the Israel-Iran conflict intensifies, with Tehran launching a second wave of missile strikes on Israeli territory, including Tel Aviv. The ongoing hostilities have drawn global attention, with Western allies voicing concern over the threat of a broader regional war.
Canada, which maintains close ties with both NATO allies and key stakeholders in the Middle East, is now closely monitoring the situation, especially in light of threats to its embassies and nationals in the region.
The Prime Minister’s office has not yet announced any changes to Canada’s diplomatic presence or travel advisories, but officials indicate that contingency plans are being evaluated.
Global Response
Carney’s position aligns with other Western leaders who have supported Israel’s right to self-defense while urging de-escalation. Former U.S. President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister also issued statements earlier this week condemning Iranian aggression and emphasizing the need for a negotiated solution.
The Canadian government is expected to continue consultations with its G7 partners as the conflict develops.
